In 1977 Marc Bolan and T Rex toured with a little up and coming support act The Damned. If there was ever a mix of these two ground breaking acts, it’s Last Great dreamers. Originally formed in the late eighties and reformed again in 2014 they are still as unfashionable today as they were then, refreshingly so. They have a pop sensibility, an energetic delivery, they absolutely reek of dark glamour and sound like if Jack The Ripper joined Hanoi Rocks. If you like your rock and roll acts to shoot from the hip, you should catch these guys at Camden Rocks this June, guitarist Slyder tells us why.
When did your relationship with Camden start?
I was aware of Camden market as a kid & remember visiting to buy clothes as a teenager. There & Kensington markets were the places to go for rock’n’roll fashion in the late 80s. We also used to hang out at the Good Mixer.
Have you played in Camden before?
The Last Great Dreamers were based in London & as the Marquee Club closed, the sleaze rock’n’roll scene faded, grunge came in & Britpop. The scene shifted from the West End to Camden, around that time we played the Dublin castle, The Underworld, Camden palace (now Koko). Since the bands return in 2014 most of our London shows have been in Camden, The Underworld, Fiddlers Elbow, Purple Turtle…
What was your reaction when you knew you would be playing there this year?
Obviously we were very keen to get on this as a band was originally founded in London & having had a very close relationship with the Camden venues over the years, we were very pleased to finally be part of it.
From the announcement of bands so far who are you looking forward to seeing and who would you hope may yet make it on?
The Damned, the Main Grains, would be good to see The Black Bullets added too.
Have you been to Camden Market, what did you buy?
Back in the late 80/early 90s i used to buy skinny black jeans, tees, hats etc.
Which Camden venue is the best to play at?
We’ve done the Underworld many times & always a good show & the Camden Palace (now Koko and a Camden Rocks venue this year – GIGsoup) was great too.
George Orwell used to live in Camden, do you know any Camden trivia?
I once beat Morrissey in a pub music quiz at The Engine Rooms!
Why should I as a gig goer make an effort to see you guys at Camden this year?
Last Great Dreamers are probably the best power-pop rock’n’roll band you’ve never heard of! Having disappeared for a while we are making a big impression on a wide range of people who’ve never seen us before with our dynamic stage show plus we have a very diverse range of influences, just read a few of our reviews & you will hear mentions of The Kinks, Hanoi Rocks, New York Dolls, Green Day. Our songs are packed with catchy choruses, melody, emotion & passion.
If this doesn’t convince you (and frankly anyone who knows more trivia than Morrissey gets our vote), then we don’t know what will. Tickets for Camden Rocks are still available now HERE
