Today’s BOOM! Track of the Day comes from Hannah Lou Clark; a name you will be hearing repeatedly in 2016 and someone we’ve covered heavily over the past few weeks (we reviewed her brand new EP ‘It’s Your Love’, and we loved it!)
Her previous material won her a Rhythm Ace on Eba. She has also collaborated with artists such as Rob Ellis (Torres, Anna Calvi, PJ Harvey) and Deb Goodge (My Bloody Valentine) . To top it all off, she has recently embarked on her first UK headline tour.
Hannah Lou Clark is leading the way for artists setting their own precedent on how their music is produced and distributed. When GIGsoup spoke to her she cited how important it is to “have full control and do things 100%.”
Check out what else the artist had to say…
Your new EP ‘It’s Your Love’ was released on the 22nd of April! What was the inspiration behind it?
The main theme is change, and about finding courage. The death of a life chapter, but the beauty within that.
You own your own label Quatre Femmes Records. What drove you to set up and release your own material on your label as apposed to other avenues?
I wanted to have full control and do things 100% my own way from start to finish. It also made sense at this point to be self sufficient.
You have your first UK headline tour coming up. and you’re performing at some festivals that are fast approaching. Are you nervous?
I always have a certain level of nerves, because I care deeply about my work. I feel a sense of expectation, but I’m excited to rise to the challenge!
Your sound could be described as indie pop and your vocals are amazing! How would you describe your sound in six words to new fans? And what is your musical process?
Thank you! I’d say…honest, melancholic, twisted, alternative, pop, rock. My musical process nearly always starts with a motif, usually on guitar. Once I have a part that I’m happy with, it will start to inspire some lyrical themes. I try and get the bare bones down and then focus more on the lyrics afterwards.
You are tipped to have massive success in 2016. What are your main goals for the year ahead?
I plan to write a lot! It helps me make sense of my life. I hope to tour as much as possible, and play my songs to new crowds!
It has been two years since the release of your previous EP ‘Kids in Heat’. How does this new EP differ musically and journey wise?
The first EP was recorded in my living room, and mostly onto four track tape. This new EP was recorded in a studio in South East London, and done much more “by the book”. So they are sonically quite different! Lyrically I suppose the first EP is hinting at things to come!
Hannah Lou Clarks next gig will be at the Handmade Festival in Leicester.
