Royal Canoe’s single ‘Bathtubs’ is certainly one of the most infectious tracks of the year and is even more incredible when you consider the amount of genre-crossing, and experimentation going on in its 5 minutes and 51 seconds of playtime.

Taken from the band’s second album ‘Today we’re Believers’ it’s a clever mix of 80’s strings, a catchy chorus and contains more idea’s and layers than your standard electro-indie track. It’s a massive track for a group still learning their trade.

Royal Canoe only formed in 2010, and while the debut album ‘Co-op Mode’ may have slipped under the radar in Europe, they certainly seem to be making headway with this new release. Originating from Winnipeg, Manitoba this 6-piece seem to be re-writing how standard indie should be made, so much so that fellow electro-indie pioneers Alt-J not only asked them to tour with them but Thom from the group also remixed ‘Nightcrawlin’ from the album (see below). High praise indeed.

There appears to be a real momentum to the band and if it wasn’t for a small visa issue then they would have also been supporting Tricky on his US dates. The good news though is that the band are touring the UK. Three dates have been announced for November 2013…

14th November – London, Black Heart
15th November – Brighton, Hope
16th November – Manchester, Fallow Cafe

Have a listen to ‘Nightcrawlin’ and watch the excellent video for ‘Bathtubs’, above.
