Partners in crime in both their personal and work life, New Portals are a husband and wife duo made up of Ruth and Mike Aicken. They bring us a beautiful dreamy sound, which transports us to another world in the form of their latest single, ‘Skyline’.
Having started together as composers for a theatre production company, the couple took their work abroad, travelling the world whilst making music with their ukulele and recording ideas on an iPhone. After hearing news of a little boy who spent the last days of his life listening to a song they’d written for the show, Ruth and Mike came to the realisation that their music could be more to people than just some chords and lyrics thrown together, which is where New Portals began.
When did you start in music as a duo together?
New Portals– We started as teens when we first started going out. Just jamming and writting, when we went for walks we practiced nailing harmonies! A sad affair.
Your name, New Portals, comes out of quite a sweet but heartfelt experience of a very ill little boy. It must have felt a huge honour to know that your music could help someone in such a hard time?
NP-Awe great research! Yes we were massively moved and still well up when we think of this little guy. To call it an honour is an understatement as we’ve had messages from his mum thanking us for writing these songs that he loved and soothed the family towards the end of his life. Songs really can be portals that help us transcend this world. Ha, too deep?
Describe your sound in four words…
NP-Dreamy, edgy, indie, chill
‘Skyline’ is your latest release, after your previous single ‘Groove Boy’. It’s a beautiful song with a great amount of success already. Where did your influence for this song come from?
NP-‘Skyline’ came from a snapshot image we had of someone driving away from the big city in order to get a rest from it all. It’s inspired by New York, one the most iconic of big cities, but also a metaphor for achieving great things and the exhaustion, physical and emotional, that comes with that.
The Guardian noted you as their Band of the Week at the beginning of this month. How does this make you feel, to see how far you’ve come?
NP-It’s truely so cool. And unbelievable. So nice to be recognised as up-and-coming I guess. Good to know people are starting to be aware that we exist!
What’s next for New Portals? Any exciting things you can let us know of for 2016?
NP-Yes- we have lots more songs and music videos to come. We’re itching to get them released and they are getting better and better the more we write. Hopefully a tour also – we’re trying to get a team together now to get that organised. We want to work really hard in 2016.
