It’s here! Primavera Sound 2018 in Barcelona is on from Wednesday 30 May until Saturday 4th June, followed swiftly by NOS Primavera Sound in Porto from Thursday 7th – Saturday 9th June. Both festivals are pretty similar in terms of their unique layout – incredible acts, heart-wrenching clashes, and a party that goes on until dawn every night. So in preparation for festival goers heading to either iteration of Primavera, we’ve compiled a list of some of our top recommendations for surviving this major European festival, as well as some from pro festival attendees.
1. Bring something warm – enough clothes to see you through the night
The costa de España in June is by no means chilly – but after hot days and a few too many beers, sitting around watching music until dawn can be pretty uncomfortable. Wear your full festival attire, but take a sweatshirt – dress sensibly and take full advantage of Primavera’s hot food and drink vendors. Also, you’ll want to wear some good footwear, says jiber on Reddit: “Bring good walking shoes as there’s a lot of walking to do especially if you want to go from the beach stage to one of the main stages.”

2. Go see what you want to see
This can’t be stated enough. If you’re going with a group of friends, you’re bound to have differing tastes in music. Rather than tagging along to each other’s favourite bands, it’s best to go see what you want to see. In case phones die or get lost, agree on a main meeting point with your buddies for later on in the evening.
3. But don’t be afraid to explore something new!
Some of the best acts are sometimes the least unexpected – there’s a reason why Primavera Sound is home to the best of rising and established talent. Try listening live to something you’ve never heard before, whether it’s post-hardcore or dance electronica.
4. Take a battery pack
To make sure you don’t get separated from friends for too long, take a spare charging pack for your phone. Also great in case you can’t locate your friends or need a way of navigating the sea of unknown music is to use clashfinder.com. You can create a shared clashfinder or share your link with other friends, and mark in different colours and labels who will be at what. 5. Time to be a teenager again and sleep through the day
“Those folks really know how to party. I was exhausted each night. Be prepared to be up really late,” says imOnWelfare over on Reddit. To survive the festival, you’ll need to be prepared to sleep through the sunny hours. There aren’t many music festivals that kick off at 5 PM and wrap up at 5 AM (if you’re lucky) so to avoid a grumpy week, catch up on your sleep.
6. Stay safe
Of course, don’t forget your standard safety rules when you’re drinking by night and sleeping by day. In central Barcelona, be careful around Las Ramblas when navigating back to the city late at night – there can be pickpockets around. Top up your suncream often and wear a hat and stay hydrated. The festival is hectic, so remember to take some time out for yourself!
