With Brighton’s Great Escape Festival now a matter of weeks away GIGsoup have selected 15 artists we feel you simply shouldn’t miss.
Today’s choice was fairly unanimous. Glasgow band Catholic Action have been touring their native Scotland for a while now and the ripples have finally been felt as far as the seaside town of Brighton. Already personally selected by Alex Kapranos to support FFS, along with support slots with The Libertines and Swim Deep it would appear it’s only a matter of time before the ripples turn into something a little more substantial.
The four piece promise to be one of the standout bands at this years festival and lead singer and guitarist Chris McCrory spoke to GIGsoup about the Greta Escape, and his ‘go-to beach’ accessory…
How does it feel to be playing at The Great Escape 2016?
Describe yourself in 1 word
What’s your essential go-to beach accessory? (Spade, towel, beers, Game Boy Colour etc)
A sony walkman and a Dead Kennedys tape WAS my go-to beach accessory the last time I spent a decent amount of time on a beach. Spain ’05 Forever.
“The Great Escape” is also the name of the bonafide Gwen Stefani classic, aside from that what is your Gwen Stefani tune of choice?
The one where she spells “bananas”. It really speaks to me, because I like bananas.
If you weren’t a musician, what would you be?
An audio engineer, a teacher or a buddhist monk. I’d definitely still be indecisive though.
If you could have your dream festival (dead or alive), who would be the three headliners and why?
This is a really hard question. It’ll have to be:
Live at Pompeii era Pink Floyd… It’d be worth it for that stoned breakdown in Echoes alone…
Sonic Youth, because I’m reading Kim’s book and I really wish I could see them live again.
And Mr Ziggy Stardust. I do not think I need to explain that one.
What can we expect from your set at The Great Escape?
Active Catholicism. Love songs and indecision.
If you could recommend 3 other acts to check out at this year’s festival, who would they be?
Money. Simply put, their new album is a masterpiece.
Teleman. They do almost irritatingly beautiful things with melody. I really admire that.
And… Anna Meredith. She sounds how Phillip Glass would have sounded if he could dance.
If you could be playing anywhere in the world in 12 months time, where would it be?
Anywhere but Glasgow. And then Glasgow. (Japan).
