With Brighton’s Great Escape Festival now just over a week away GIGsoup have selected 15 artists we feel you simply shouldn’t miss.
Today, and for your pleasure, we’d like to introduce the quite wonderful City Calm Down. The former-electronic four piece from Melbourne, Australia tweaked their sound for last years excellent In A Restless House album introducing a fresh indie sound to proceedings. An album which moved away from their early synth-ladened tracks (see their excellent Movements EP from 2012) the band now give Brightonions the chance to experience their creations on their first ever trip to Europe.
We spoke to the band ahead of next weeks festival…
How does it feel to be playing at The Great Escape 2016?
To say we’re ‘chuffed’ to be on the bill for TGE’16 would be an understatement. I’ve never even been to Europe. “PLAY A GIG OVERSEAS” has been on my life bucket-list for the past decade, so yeah, it’s a dream come true!
How has your 2016 been so far?
Where has it gone?! The past 4 months have evaporated. We have been burning the candle at both end in preparation for the In A Restless House album tour (Australia wide), our Like A Version (Triple J) performance, playing a few festivals as well as trying to keep our heads in the game and continuing to write new music.
Describe yourself in 1 word
What’s your essential go-to beach accessory? (Spade, towel, beers, Game Boy Colour etc)
UV protective Sun Shelter / tent thing (we burn easily, I’m sure you Brit’s can relate!)
“The Great Escape” is also the name of the bonafide Gwen Stefani classic, aside from that what is your Gwen Stefani tune of choice?
NO DOUBT ‘hella good’ 4 eva
If you weren’t a musician, what you be?
I studied International Business at university, so I guess I would be an ‘International Businessman’ (?!) Who am I kidding, I think I would have followed after my old man and become a painter / visual artist (with a penchant for top-shelf gin)
If you could have your dream festival (dead or alive), who would be the three headliners and why
Radiohead, Erykah Badu and Prince. I like a mixed bag…and my musicians alive where possible.
What can we expect from your set at The Great Escape?
We’re coming in hot off the back of a string of 10 sold-out headline dates back home, so hopefully we can throw some of that energy at the TGE crowd!
If you could recommend 3 other acts to check out at this year’s festival, who would they be?
Methyl Ethyl, Gang Of Youths, Northeast Party House
If you could be playing anywhere in the world in 12 months time, where would it be?
It seems we continue amassing more and more musicians on stage with us when we play…so in 12 months time, a nice b-r-o-a-d stage such as Glastonbury or Leeds would hopefully accommodate us (wink wink)
