Performing their own latter day new wave / punk sounds Lucie Barat is a bit Patti Smith, Louise Distras, is a bit Poly Styrene and they’re both a lot rock and roll. As they’re playing at Camden Rocks Festival in June, these two outspoken female solo artists are happy to talk to us GIGsoup about rubbish graffiti, Chinese food and ill advised tattoos.
When did your relationship with Camden start?
(Lucie B) About 15. I used to drink cans on the canal side and marker penned my awful tag everywhere. It was a rubbish, girly Lucie with an arrow…
(Louise D) The first time I visited Camden was when I was ten years old. My Dad told me that it was full of punk rockers, goths and weirdos like me. He said I would love it, and he was right!
Have you played in Camden before?
(Lucie B) I’ve played and ‘played’ in Camden 😉 it has been my returning stomping ground for many years. I’ve played (musically) everywhere from Koko to Entertainer.
(Louise D) Yes I’ve played The Barfly, Proud Galleries, Underworld, Black Heart, and I can’t wait to come back! I’m playing at Proud on 4th March with Jim Jones + The Righteous Mind as well as Camden Rocks Festival on 3rd June.
What was your reaction when you knew you would be playing the festival this year?
(Lucie B) Excellent – I’ll start preparing my liver now.
(Louise D) I’m thrilled to have been asked to play for the second year running. I can’t wait to play and check out some new bands.
From the initial announcement of bands who are you looking forward to seeing?
(Louise D) The King Blues, Yonaka, Fizzy Blood, Millie Manders + The Shutup, Happy Accidents and Brandy Row
(Lucie B) Well, obviously Carl Barat and the Jackals 😉
Have you been to Camden Market, what did you buy?
(Lucie B) Camden market, ooooh, probably some sort of joss stick and retro clothing. I used to always get my Old school Levi’s from the market and ease a hangover with some street food. Got a couple of I’ll advised tattoos as well…
(Louise D) Chinese food, of course!
Which Camden venue is the best to play at?
(Louise D) That’s a tough question, I’d have to say it’s a tie between the Underworld and Black Heart for me.
(Lucie B) The rider at Koko is always nice 😉 the old Barfly I loved.
Why should I as a gig goer make an effort to see you at Camden this year?
(Lucie B) Because it will be something a little bit different 😉 and live is always the best way to see an act. And it will be NEW – my debut single will have only just been out. Roll up! 😉 xx
(Louise D) Because you will regret it if you don’t!
So if that veiled threat from Louise Distras hasn’t convinced you already check out the line up and buy tickets to Camden Rocks Music Festival (3rd June 2017) HERE
