Tokyo Taboo play fuzzed up pop cyberpunk rock and may accidentally show a bit of nipple now and then, Thunder on The Left on the other hand are able to conjure up floods with ease of a mid level deity, even inside! GIGsoup spoke to them both pre-Camden Rocks Festival to find out how they tick and what they’re up to.
When did your relationship with Camden start?
(TOTL) At different times for us all – either as a teenager at school, going to gigs here, or when we moved here we all fell in love with the elegant dump.
(TT) Seeing Amy Winehouse sprawled out on a picnic table in the sun at The Hawley Arms started my love of Camden.

Have you played in Camden before?
(TT) Yes we are regulars. We have played The Monarch, Proud, Barfly (now The Camden Assembly) Recently had an awesome Album Launch Night at The Crowndale!
(TOTL) Yes, at Camden Rocks festival last year we played at 1pm at Bloc Bar, this year we are playing at 8pm at Belushi’s. We’ve also played at Camden Assembly (FKA Barfly), Monarch and Black heart?
What was your reaction when you knew you would be playing there this year?
(TT) We were super happy as we love Camden Town and Camden Rocks is an amazing day of music.
(TOTL) Very excited, especially with such a later stage time than last year. Chris who runs the festival is an absolute dude.
From the announcement of bands so far who are you looking forward to seeing and who would you hope may yet make it on?
(TOTL) Pulled Apart By Horses. Our mates Tokyo Taboo & Rumble Fish are playing, happy that False Advertising made it on the bill too and we have been wanting to see Frauds and Black Doldrums for ages. Weirds will play a guaranteed blinder too! Also looking forward to seeing Asylums, HCBP, The Kut, Turbowolf, Aaron Buchanan & The Cult Classic & Yonaka, All depends on timings and clashes!
(TT) Feeder and The Coral will be awesome. Music we both grew up with. I’m sure there will be a few more surprises.
Have you been to Camden Market, what did you buy?
(TOTL) Carla bought a mental multi-coloured glow in the dark hoodie from CyberDog after we played last year, it sure is understated. Arun bought some weed one time, it was pretty shit.
(TT) I bought some transparent Doc Martins from there. I love to go to Cyberdog and buy my colourful tights and false lashes from the shop next to Camden Town tube.
Which Camden venue is the best to play at?
(TOTL) We played a pre-Camden Rocks show last year at Barfly (now Camden Assembly) and the place was rammed. During our set a water pipe broke near the stairs at the back of the room . Obviously our epic set was so epic it flooded the place, biblical shit right there!
(TT) The Monarch is pretty epic. Really loved playing Barfly too.
Camden Starbucks used to be the Lock-keeper’s lodge, do you know any Camden trivia?
(TT) The Dublin Castle is where Dolly lost her virginity.
(TOTL) Only when we google ‘Camden trivia’, so that’s a firm no. (Well you do now, see above – GIGsoup)
Why should I as a gig goer make an effort to see you guys at Camden this year?
(TOTL) Because we go absolutely ape shit live and our riffs are bigger than Teresa May’s Prozac stash.
(TT) Last time we played the Monarch Dolly had a nipple slip. A full on wardrobe malfunction but she kept head banging anyways. If that’s not a good reason to check out a band I’m not sure what is.
If you needed any more reasons to see these guys at Camden Rocks it is the day before Dolly and Mike from Tokyo Taboo jet off to get married so why not pretend you’re at a Toyko Taboo pre-wedding party, Thunder on The Left may be doing just that! Tickets HERE
