Concrete Meal talk to GIGsoup in this exclusive interview.
With their angsty atmosphere, Concrete Meal are three guys whose music oozes punk. Performing at venues around Amsterdam, Concrete Meal are a punk trio that blow away the audience at every show with their powerful rock vibes.
How did the band form?
DAVE: Well, me and Dries were friends in elementary school and we played together when I was 12 and he was 11, but we didnt have a bassist.
DRIES: We didnt have a bass player so we were just like playing around I guess.
DAVE: 3 years further, we met at Rock Out! and we were like, “yo lets play together,” and we started jamming.
DRIES: We started together, just down in my house. And he was talking about Bas and we invited him for a day to come play with us and shit and it was alright- we were like, “we have a band.”
Which musicians inspire your music?
DAVE: Blink 182, Green Day -but the 90s Green Day, The Offspring…
DRIES: Those are all punk bands that we kind of ‘fit in’, but before I was in this band I didn’t listen to that much punk, I was listening to Slipknot and Limp Bizkit.
DAVE: Me neither, I used to listen to AC/DC and that kind of stuff, but then I listened to punk bands and realised I wanted to play that.
How do you find the music scene in Amsterdam?
DRIES: Kind of boring, I guess. There aren’t much bands to go to and there aren’t many events with rock bands, metal bands or punk bands to go to, its all kinda underground.
How did you come up with the name Concrete Meal?
DRIES: When we were in elementary school, and it was just the two of us, we were called Rocktober – it was a name he (Dave) came up with, it was just for fun you know we were like eleven/twelve. Then we kind of grew apart, and then we ruinited sort of and i came up with the name concrete meal. This was because i was skating a lot at the time and i was listening to a rap song and they were rapping about ‘eating the concrete’ after you slam really hard and I was like huh, Concrete Meal, that’s fucking awesome.
What kind of music did you grow up with?
DAVE: I grew up with Kiss. My dad always used to listen to Kiss so then I listened to it and I liked it because they had face makeup, and I thought that was really cool because I was little. So yeah I grew up with Kiss, AC/DC and Led Zepellin.
If you could have written any song, what song would it be?
DRIES: Uh…uh… yeah I dont know.
DAVE: For me, its ‘Basketcase’ from Green Day.
DRIES: Uh, I think ‘Eyeless’ from Slipknot is awesome. If we wrote that, that would be pretty cool.
