Labelled ‘the piece of music I’m most excited about at the moment’ by Elbow frontman and BBC 6 Music stalwart DJ Guy Garvey, it’s no surprise that Ainslie Wills, one of – if not the most exciting alternative phenomenon to emerge from the sub-tropic in recent years is headed for her debut at The Great Escape this month.
Australia is represented in dense numbers in terms of performers at The Great Escape this year, with 19 bands and artists flying the flag in Brighton, but for Wills this month marks her maiden visit to the humble seaside town. Not only is it her first festival appearance on British soil, Ainslie Wills has never performed at a festival outside of her home country and given the fact that The Great Escape is deemed as something of a ‘right of passage’ with regards to it’s distinguished nature – this will no doubt be a landmark moment for her.
GIGsoup’s Ben Bowman caught up with Ainslie Wills as part of the ‘In Their Own Words’ series for The Great Escape before she brings her bold, yet excellently executed melody and lyricism to Brighton.
How does it feel to be playing The Great Escape 2017?
Well given it will be my first international festival appearance ever, I have to admit I’m pretty excited… I have heard great things about The Great Escape.
What do you know about the festival?
I know that it is bursting with an amazing line up of musicians from all around the world and it’s near the beach. I love the beach.

What can we expect from your set at The Great Escape?
Undulating vocals, atmospheric sonic guitar layers and songs based on the human condition.
What do you know about the other acts playing this year and who would you like to check out?
I have just looked through the gargantuan list of artists! There are too many I want to see! However I would highly recommend seeing Olympia, Gabriella Cohen, Gordi and Jack Ladder, Sampa The Great from the Aussie list.
What is the best thing about Brighton? / Have you been to Brighton before?
I will have to let you know once I’ve been there. This will be the maiden-voyage so to speak. Can’t wait!
What were you doing this time last year?
Good question. This time last year I was preparing to play a great little festival in Tasmania, Australia called DARK MOFO. I was also probably eating nutella out of the jar at some stage, I’m addicted.
When you go to the Beach what can you not go without? Sunglasses, Pennies for the slot machines? A Ball of some sort?
In Australia, you cannot go to the beach without a tonne of sunscreen, a hat, water, a book, sunnies and a little snack.
What is the best seaside holiday you’ve been on?
I think it’s yet to come… even though it won’t technically be a holiday 😉
What’s your favourite thing to get from the Ice Cream Van?
I’m all about Hokey Pokey icecream which I’m presuming is a thing in the UK too? It’s golden pieces of toffee in vanilla ice-cream… did I mention I was a sweet tooth?
What are your plans for the rest of the Summer?
I’ll be on tour with Tom Chaplin throughout May and then heading back home to do some headline shows to celebrate the release of some new music.
