You may be wondering… Betty Who? Well, by the time The Great Escape Festival rolls around in a couple of months time, you’ll know all about Jessica Anne Newham and her powerful electro-pop as she has promised to bring lots of dancing and energy to Brighton this May. Her latest album ‘The Valley’ is due to drop on the 24th of March, so with just under two weeks until its release GIGsoup’s Ben Bowman caught up with Betty as she gears up for her first ever visit to Brighton’s seaside this Summer.

How does it feel to be playing The Great Escape 2017?

I’m so excited to be playing the Great Escape, festivals always have the craziest energy to them and I’m excited to explore this one more and hopefully even catch some other artists. That’s the best part after all.

What do you know about the festival?

I know that it’s this crazy, massive showcase for hundreds of acts.  It sort of sounds similar to SXSW which is one of the coolest setups for a festival, in my opinion.

What can we expect from your set at The Great Escape?

You can expect lots of dancing and energy, that is for sure.

What do you know about the other acts playing this year and who would you like to check out?

I actually haven’t had a chance to check out the lineup but honestly my favourite way to take in music is to sort of wander around and see who I stumble across.  That’s how I’ve discovered some of my favourite bands.

What is the best thing about Brighton? / Have you been to Brighton before?

I have never been to Brighton before, so I’m not sure what my favourite thing about it will be but I will report back!

What were you doing this time last year?

This time last year I was way deep in a hole of a studio somewhere trying to write this record!

When you go to the Beach what can you not go without? Sunglasses, Pennies for the slot machines? A Ball of some sort?

When I hit the beach, I most certainly cannot survive without a book (reading a Joan Didion book that my godmother got me for Christmas right now) and a cover-up that always ends up doubling as a turban because I’m just chic like that.

What is the best seaside holiday you’ve been on?

It’s not technically seaside, but my parents live on a lake in Michigan and it’s my favourite place to lay out in the sun and jump in the water and just chill. I so rarely get to chill so when I can, it’s an added bonus that I get to hang out with my dogs and family.

What’s your favourite thing to get from the Ice Cream Van?

Cookies and cream ice cream, in a cone obviously because I’m not a barbarian.

What are your plans for the rest of the Summer?

I will be playing a lot of festivals and hopefully getting a week or two to lay by the lake!
