We sat down to speak with Maya about her release House On A Rocky Road, working with a sundance winning director and 5 favourites…
Welcome to Gigsoup, firstly talk to us about where you’re from and how you got into music?
Heiling from the Netherlands my musical style evolved from contemporary classical to electronic cinematic pop. There was always a piano at home that I would compose songs on.
You have just released House on a Rocky Road, tell us about the inspiration behind this release…
It was partially inspired by remarkable characters from my life which are my grandfather who was a man of style and honor and my grandmother who is a character I relate to. House on a Rocky Road is in Darkwille County, where I can meet with all the quirky characters.
What’s your songwriting process like?
Normally I have the idea for the lyrics which I later develop together with a melody. Or I record little pieces of the melody to my phone, because I often get an idea while being on the street, in the supermarket or while travelling.
The visuals were directed by Sundance award winner Tamara Kotevska, what was the process like working alongside her?
She is great. She was very creative and dedicated to the project. We worked on this project for quite some time, because we all had high goals and I’m proud we achieved them successfully.
