Currently on tour with Pierce Brothers throughout Europe, GIGsoup had a chat with Soham De about the tour, his new single ‘Forest’ and upcoming debut EP …

Could you introduce yourself?

My name’s Soham De. I’m a 21 year-old singer-songwriter from the UK and I sing and write songs!

Who are some of your biggest influences?

Just anything with emotion in that’s a raw performance or something lyrically that hits me hard.  Artists like: 21 Pilots, Damien Rice, Bon Iver, Ben Howard, Hozier, Caravan Palace, Max Richter and Daughter.

Could you talk about your new EP? How was the writing and recording process?

It was really lovely to let the songs breathe and develop them organically and being in an environment where you could throw a few different ideas around to see what worked – it’s lovely to have that freedom and creativity in a studio.

What was the inspiration behind ‘Forest’? What does the track mean to you?

There isn’t really a specific inspiration behind forest.  I think you can find inspiration from anything with an open mind, music’s obviously a great way to start but films, memories or even small things you notice as you go about your day. I just sort of write and question why I wrote it later, just believing that there’s a reason for it that allows me to express myself. The same happened with ‘Forest’.  I was writing at night and suddenly started playing the guitar melody which put me down a creative path I had to pursue until I finished the song.

How have your recent shows been going?

I’ve been touring for nearly two weeks supporting The Pierce Brothers in Europe.  It has been an amazing experience, playing it different cities and countries I’ve never played in before. It’s been special to play to such respectful audiences and people have been really lovely after shows too. The Pierce Brothers are absolutely amazing, it’s an honour to support them, they’re one of the best live acts I’ve ever seen.

What are some of your future plans?

Writing, releasing music and performing, in any order really! I’m so excited to finally release this EP.  And then more new music in the new year with lots of writing going on currently.  I’m also doing a headline show at Paper Dress Vintage in Hackney on February 28th and the iconic Paradiso in The Netherlands on the 3rd March, I can’t wait!

Soham’s debut EP is released on October 12th.  Stream it via Spotify.

Catch him live at Paper Dress Vintage (Hackney) on February 28th 2019.
