The Great Escape festival takes place this May and will see a flock of artists from around the globe and the UK make the journey to Brighton’s seaside to provide the ultimate showcase of the best new music surfacing across the musical spectrum. Canada is highly represented at this years Great Escape festival with 23 artists flying the Maple Leaf flag all the way to the south coast of England and one of those flag-bearers is Alexis Young.
Young is the mastermind behind Youngblood, who have been described as “what the ’60s thought the future would sound like”, and their fusion of dream pop and electronica should make them one of the most exciting acts at this year’s festival.
Alexis took the time out to speak to us about lemon gelato, puking glitter and her excitement for this summer.
How does it feel to be playing The Great Escape 2017?
A bit tingly! We’re super excited to be playing The Great Escape, as it’s some of our band members’ first time in the UK. It’s also a bit daunting to be playing a festival that reportedly broke Arcade Fire, which as fellow Canadians, is a syrupy-sweet and tantalizing prospect.
What do you know about the festival?
Other than the aforementioned Arcade Fire bit, TGE has a reputation for being a super cool and fun place with a lot of great shows and great bands.

What can we expect from your set at The Great Escape?
Our music is best described as “what the ’60s thought the future would sound like”, which in essence means that we like to blend classic pop structure with hazy and ethereal spacey sounds. When we hit the stage, those elements take on more of an insistent and assertive energy.
What do you know about the other acts playing this year and who would you like to check out?
To be honest, I haven’t fully jumped into the lineup yet to check out bands I didn’t know of before, but a few names that popped out include Homeshake, Olympia, and Cherry Glazerr. Definitely going to try to see each of those bands play.
What is the best thing about Brighton? / Have you been to Brighton before?
I haven’t been to Brighton before! Tell me where to go!
What were you doing this time last year?
This time last year we released our first music video for our single ‘Feel Alright’, which features three characters becoming obsessed with cultural ideals and becoming consumed by them. I puke glitter and make out with a mannequin, so I’d recommend watching, unless you have pediophobia.
When you go to the Beach what can you not go without? Sunglasses, pennies for the slot machines? A ball of some sort?
Definitely sunglasses, and 30spf sunscreen because I burn like nobody’s business.
What is the best seaside holiday you’ve been on?
I went backpacking for a few years throughout Australia, southeast Asia and India, and saw some pretty incredible beaches along the way. I don’t know what it is about the water, but life is always better when you’re close to the shore.
What’s your favourite thing to get from the ice cream van?
What are your plans for the rest of the summer?
We’ll be back in Canada for summer, so we’ll be cruising around the summer festival circuit, playing until our faces melt off.
