Indie pop with a dreamy feel is what LA-based Saint Motel do best. You’ve probably heard their track “My Type” as it seems to be a favourite with UK advertising companies thanks to its super catchy hook. Last year they released their second full-length record “saintmoteltelevision”, the first ever virtual reality album. It featured a 360-degree video for every song, and why? Because they felt like it, that’s why.
We caught up with vocalist, guitarist and pianist A/J Jackson ahead of the band’s appearance at TRNSMT next month to talk all things Glasgow and partying with Frightened Rabbit.
How are you feeling about playing the first ever TRNSMT festival?
Hot and bothered.
Who are you most excited to see playing at the festival?
Playing the same day as Radiohead which is pretty lucky. That will be epic. Also, same day as Belle and Sebastian.
Have you been to Glasgow before? If so, what’s your favourite thing about the city
We played King Tut’s a couple months ago and it was amazing. I wish we would have had more time to explore the city though. Frightened Rabbit have offered to take us out on town so I’m sure we’ll see some good dives this time.
What’s the best Glasgow venue you’ve played in?
Which is your favourite track to play live?
They’re all my children, I love em all equally.
You’ve released the first ever VR album – tell us a bit about that! What made you want to release music that way?
To explore a new technology and see what we could create with it.
What was the first festival you went to as a punter?
Drove to Edgefest in Wisconsin I think. I remember Beck was on the lineup.
Tell us something people may not know about you?
I make the best French Toast.
Why should people go see Saint Motel at TRNSMT?
Because we have the antidote.
Saint Motel play the King Tut’s stage at TRNSMT on Friday 7th July. Tickets are available now.
