While many may be familiar with the Brit Awards, Grammys and EMA’s there is a huge pool of talent that currently sits outside of the aforementioned nomination demographic.
The Unsigned Music Awards started in 2015 and casts it’s beam away from well known chart-toppers and firmly in the direction of unsigned artists. At GIGsoup we’ve always made a point of giving our readership an insight into the latest and greatest music from unsigned artists and it’s with this in mind that we’ve decided to talk to a few of the acts up for nomination at this years awards ceremony.
Today we’re concentrating on the ‘Best Female Solo Artist’ category and nominee Elle Exxe. The Edinburgh artist has just dropped her debut album ‘Love Fuel Hate’ and we caught up with her to talk about her recent nomination, inspirations and the next 12 months….
Tell us about yourself?
I’m a bad ass Scottish lass …ummm. I love making things – usually music but I also design clothes, jewellery, artwork and digital graphics.
Describe your style?
My musical style is a dirty-pop or pop-with-attitude. I like a nasty bass riff, big beats and a feisty but catchy vocal over the top.
How does it feel to be nominated?
Blessed, it’s amazing! There are thousands of unsigned artists and I’ve been selected as one of few to be nominated for an award – that’s an incredible feeling.
What are you influences?
Anything that feels real, impassioned and true. Whether that be overheard conversations in a toilet cubicle, the sound of a car making a getaway or a lyric in an Alanis Morrisette song. I grew up on rock and jazz but have spent the last few years getting deep into hip hop and pop music.
Do you prefer playing solo or in a band?
With a band 100%! The energy of other musicians on stage and the flexibility of what you can do is a thrill. I mean…I don’t mind drinking and dancing on my own, but it’s always better with others right?
Your Top three solo female artists of all time?
Beyonce, Rihanna, P!nk.
Is there a particular song or musical passage that never fails to move you emotionally?
LOADS! There’s a song called “There Is Nothing Like” by a band called Hillsong United on the album “Look To You”. It’s a seriously long song (7 mins 30) and probably only gets good half way, but it builds up and up and up and this guy is singing about the deepest love and faith straight from his gut and it blows me away every time.
The lyrics in Eminem “Sing For The Moment”
“That’s why we sing for these kids who don’t have a thing
Except for a dream and a fucking rap magazine
Who post pin-up pictures on they walls all day long
Idolize their favorite rappers and know all their songs
Or for anyone who’s ever been through shit in they lives
So they sit and they cry at night wishing they’d die
‘Til they throw on a rap record, and they sit and they vibe
We’re nothing to you, but we’re the fucking shit in their eyes”
More recently “I don’t need faith, I just want you” in “Good Goodbye” by Lianne La Havas.
There has been a huge increase in record sales by solo female artists over the past 3 years. Why do you feel this is?
Society is evolving and becoming more accepting and respectful of women. There are a lot of incredible women out there making loads of individually amazing music and finally they’re getting the appreciation and recognition they deserve. There have always been incredible women making amazing music, but they haven’t always been awarded the same opportunities and there’s still some way to go. I’d love to see an equal rise in record sales for all-female bands and female producers.
Who would you nominate your category?
What can we expect in the future?
I’m working on a film for my album Love Fuelled Hate. Musically I’m working towards album 2. I’m going out to SXSW and building my live show, so expect more ExXtravaganZza’s. Hopefully my clothing designs will be released next year too! So there’s loads to look forward to!
If you could be playing anywhere in the world in 12 months time, where would it be?
