While many may be familiar with the Brit Awards, Grammys and EMA’s there is a huge pool of talent that currently sits outside of the aforementioned nomination demographic.

The Unsigned Music Awards started in 2015 and casts it’s beam away from well known chart-toppers and firmly in the direction of unsigned artists. At GIGsoup we’ve always made a point of giving our readership an insight into the latest and greatest music from unsigned artists and it’s with this in mind that we’ve decided to talk to a few of the acts up for nomination at this years awards ceremony.

Today we’re concentrating on the ‘Best Urban Act’ category and London artist J-Sol…

Tell us about yourself

I’m an up and coming UK RnB pop singer. I first started singing in my church gospel choir. I was the kid always in the back with talent but no confidence to be in the limelight. Since then I’ve won several awards, appeared on tv shows, opened for artists such as boyz II Men, little mix, jeremih and many more to an audience of thousands, including olympic stadium. I’ve charted at #10 on iTunes sold over 5,000 copies of my music and over 1 million youtube views. My dreams really are beginning to unravel.

How does it feel to be nominated?

It feels amazing, before I received the news i wasn’t having a good day, so the nomination definitely turned my frown upside down Lol.

Describe your style. Who are your influences?

My style is a fusion between, urban hip hop inspired instrumentation/ bass lines accompanied with RnB vocals and pop melodies that will make you remember the song. I alway make sure my songs tell a story and that theres something for my audience to take away and feel inspired or uplifted by.

My influences are Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Destiny’s Child, Beyonce, Usher, Brandy, Boyz II Men and Chris Brown.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I’ve just released a short film type visual to my song ‘Changes’ with Paigey Cakey. The video tackles domestic violence, bullying and social rejects. I really enjoyed the process of bringing my video to life visually in a creative way, so i’ll definitely be doing more short films for my songs. Im also flying out to LA and Chicago next month for some gigs and studio sessions of which i’m really looking forward to, i haven’t been to the US before so should be fun.

If you could play anywhere in the world in 12 months time, where would it be?

It would probably be in madison square gardens doing my own show to a sold out crowd, that would be a-mazing!!!

Is there a particular song or musical passage that never fails to move you emotionally?

Hmmm, i’d probably say R Kelly “I believe I can fly” that song spoke volumes to me growing and still even till today. It taught me how powerful the mind was and how important it is to think positive. ‘If i can see it, then i can do it, if i just believe it, theres nothing to it, i believe i can fly’

What other urban artists do you most admire?

I admire a lot apart from the ones i mentioned before a few more names are; Craig David, Loick Essien, Lady Leshurr, NAO and Angel. They’re also all from the UK.

How did you get into urban music? Did it choose you, or did you choose it?

I got into music after watching Usher performing on top of the pops just after Eastenders on a Friday night. I’ll never forget how much I wanted to be like him and seeing all the girls going crazy for him, i wanted that haha!
