For the first time in seventeen years, The Jesus and Mary Chain have announced that they’re heading back into the studio to record a new album. Their last Album ‘Monki’ was released by the Scottish band in 1998. Speaking to Time Out New York, lead singer Jim Reid said “We’re doing an album now. We actually just started recording, it’s early days, but I would say it’s a more mature sound for the Mary Chain. But let’s just wait and see.”
The band split up in 1999 but, after 8 years apart, made the decision to reform in 2007. In an interview with NME earlier this year they discussed the possibility of a new album “We’ve got the material, we’ve talked about doing an album for so long now. We got back together in 2007 and it was the plan then. We thought ‘We’ve got a bunch of songs, this would make a pretty good Mary Chain album’ – and then there was the usual slaps and scratches between my brother and myself. ‘I wanna do it here’ and ‘I don’t’ and then it was all ‘Fuck you’ and swinging at each other. The usual shit basically.”
After the success of a recent tour celebrating the 30 year anniversary of ‘Psychocandy’, their 1985 debut album, Reid said that a new album was more likely than ever before “We are kind of coming round to being in agreement, which is a bit weird for us,” he stated. “There will be an album – we will get it together. I’m more convinced now than I ever have been that there will be a new Mary Chain album.”
As it is early days there are no details of tracks thus far but hopefully there will be more to report on this new offering very soon.
