Denver-based indie five-piece Instant Empire have shared “Sugar Sweet”, a punchy and swaggering four minutes of imaginative synth rock. The track is distinctive in its own right, but it does evoke musicians from the midwestern emo scene which bleeds into their home state. Listeners might catch traces of The Hold Steady, American Football and more throughout the track. Whatever you hear, “Sugar Sweet” is an exciting taste of what’s to come when the band release their Cathedrals full-length next week.

The band describe the track as “fractured poetry at its most anxious” and explain exactly how it fits into their upcoming album. “Cathedrals is the most personal album Instant Empire has ever written – and “Sugar Sweet” is about as personal as it gets on this album. Scotty wrote the lyrics to this song very much using a free association, stream-of-conscious approach, and the song comes out fast and manic.”
Fans in the Denver area can get an early listen to Cathedrals. Instant Empire are hosting a special release party show this Friday, June 7th, at Syntax Physic Opera. Tickets are available here.
Cathedrals will be available on all digital platforms on July 14th.
