It seems to be a great day for free downloads. Earlier we announced the excellent new single for Lazytalk ‘Memories‘ and now we’ve just learnt that the amazing ‘Battles‘ by Chicago’s My Gold Mask is also available. See Soundcloud link below.
In the summer of 2013, My Gold Mask returned to the forefront with a new album ‘Leave me Midnight’, a first-ever national headlining tour and joined Metric at Red Bull Sound Select’s inaugural concert, building on their roster of supporting acts like Twin Shadow, The New Pornographers, Blonde Redhead, and Waaves. The album received average feedback and comparisons seemed to be continually made with the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s.
The good news is that the new single ‘Battles’ seems to lean away from that. There’s more of an early 80’s dance feel to it (think Depeche Mode from Black Celebration LP) and it simply demands dance-floor airtime. An equally impressive remix for the single has also just been released (Mr Kitty Remix) that if anything takes you even further back to the halcyon 1980’s. It’s quite brilliant.
Lead vocalist and percussionist Gretta Rochelle first met guitarist Jack Armondo at a rooftop party; their first words to each other were about music, and ever since the conversation between the two principal songwriters of My Gold Mask has stayed there, resulting in two well-received EPs in 2010: ‘A Thousand Voices’ and ‘A Million Miles’ (From Where We Were Last) , as well as a self-titled debut LP and the band’s previously mentioned 2013 album release ‘Leave Me Midnight’.
The band will be playing Subterranean in Chicago on the 7th February 2014.
