Ever since the 2011 split of Sonic Youth, Thurston Moore has been going in a more experimental direction, and while that’s resulted in some great work, there’s still a lot to be said for the taut, focused outsider-rock of his older material.  The newly released single ‘Cease Fire’ sees Moore go back to a more straight ahead, rocked focused sound imbued with the ravenous, howling energy of the post-Velvets noise-rock movement.  It’s simply great – tightly wound, no nonsense stuff that gets in and then gets out again at a (relatively) punchy 6 minutes.

Lyrically, ‘Cease Fire’ is just as powerfully direct as the music.  Moore commented via facebook that “Guns are designed to kill and we, as non-violent human beings, are against the killing of any person or animal. The song is also about the power of love, in all its freedom of choice. A power that no gun can extinguish as love will rule always. Melt down your guns and kiss your neighbor.”

An accompanying tour has also been announced, running from May through to July.  The tour will see Moore visit the US, UK and Europe, with a with a stop off at Holland’s Best Kept Secret Festival in there for good measure.
