Grandaddy founding member and bassist Kevin Garcia has died at the age of 41, the band have announced via Facebook. The band wrote “there are no accurate words to express what we need to. We are absolutely shattered to say that we lost our friend and band mate Kevin Garcia early this afternoon. He succumbed to the effects of a massive stroke.” Garcia co-founded the influential band in 1992 and has been with the group throughout the entirety of their career, staying with the band until their dissolvement in 2006 and rejoining them when they reformed in 2012.
Garcia’s passing is all the more of a shock because of how recently the band have been active and on the road, having toured the UK and Europe throughout March including a televised appearance at Glasgow’s 6 Music Festival. The band also made their comeback after 11 years with the excellent ‘Last Place’, also released in March – an album that saw all in the band on strong form. Grandaddy do currently have sporadic US and European shows booked, starting as soon as 7th May. It’s currently unconfirmed if these shows will continue, but the band have said “we’ll have more to say in the days ahead.Right now the four of us are grieving together.” A gofundme campaign has been set up to cover the Garcia family’s expenses and can be seen here. In the announcement, the band said “Kevin was a proud father of two children, Jayden and Gavin. He is survived by his grandmother Joan, his parents Randy and Barbara (who let us practice at their house until 2001…and who are the best), his brothers Craig and Jeff and his wife Sondra.”
The band also said “Kevin started playing with Grandaddy when he was fifteen. He was an actual angel. He navigated life with a grace, a generosity and a kindness that was utterly unique. And contagious. He is loved so deeply by so many.”
