After finishing ‘Converting Vegetarians II,’ Infected Mushroom had the idea to make an old school psy trance album with the technology of today. A multitude of plug-ins were utilized in the creation of ‘Return to the Sauce,’ both commercial plug-ins and extensive use of their own, Manipulator and I Wish, which were developed in collaboration with Polyverse Music.
Two years in the making, ‘Return to the Sauce’ is truly a masterpiece, a sonic diamond to be revered in all its brilliance, depth, and multi-faceted splendor. While reminiscent of the critically acclaimed ‘Vicious Delicious,’ Infected Mushroom has surpassed it, vivaciously evolving their trademark sound with cutting edge sequencing, complex layered melodies, and Duvdev’s enigmatic vocals expertly morphed into synthesizers.

To fully transform vocals into synthesizers is true creative innovation and has never been heard before. This fusion is bona fide metamorphosis, a profound invention that revolutionizes the world of electronic music and is indicative of the album’s ability to stand the test of time.
The album opens with ‘Flamingo,’ a track the Israeli duo has dubbed “the HEAVYWEIGHT of the album.” It’s an aural canvas of complex multi-layered synth arrangements permeated by heavy guitar riffs. This functions as a portal into the hypnotic psychedelic soundscapes that have been sculpted with masterful precision.
‘Manipulator,’ the track with the new vocal processor’s namesake, was produced entirely using Manipulator, with all sounds rendered through the plug-in. It’s an epic psy trance track with infectious melodies and exquisite complexity, signifying the progression into the full power of the album. The listener is propelled into otherworldly psychedelic symphonies that transition from eccentricity to ethereal beauty with stellar melodies and delicious breaks.
If the soundscapes are metaphorical sauce as implied by the title track, ‘Nutmeg’ is the sweet seasoning that punctuates the album, much like the aromatic spice for which it is named. This track was influenced by Hallucinogen ‘The Lone Deranger’ and serves as a testament that Infected Mushroom has successfully attained their aspiration of creating an old school psy trance album with the technology of today.
A prominent example of the innovative vocal processing can be heard on ‘Groove Attack.’ The distorted vocals proclaim, “this is a groove attack, you know we won’t stop” then flawlessly meld with the synth layers, becoming virtually indistinguishable from them. This powerful track is just one of the monumental dance-floor bombs and high intensity power anthems that shape ‘Return to the Sauce.’ The cohesion culminates with the closing track, a 48-minute continuous mix of the album.
‘Return to the Sauce’ is undeniably one of the most powerful and innovative electronic music albums of all time. It compellingly secures Infected Mushroom at the forefront of psy trance and leaders in the future of electronic music.
