Cloud Control’s second album “Dream Cave” is a real mish-mash of idea’s. That’s certainly not a criticism but it does take a little time to warm to. The undoubted talent of messrs Kelshaw, Wright and siblings Lenffer is clear to see but at times this album feels as though it doesn’t quite know what it wants to be.

There is the hypnotic “Scream Rave” which is then followed by rock track “Dojo Rising” which in turn is followed by a blues sounding “Promises”. However, and this is where i do need to tip my hat, the quality of these songs and the remainder of the album is strong.

“Dream Cave” is a major step forward from the well received and prize-winning debut album “Bliss Release”. There is certainly more maturity and a harsher sound to this album, and from a sales perspective it does contain more ‘play-list’ orientated music. With the exception of 2-3 tracks you could easily select any of the others for single release, such is their quality and last-ability.

“Scar” and “Dojo Rising” are certainly catchy, well produced tracks and it’s no coincidence they are the two singles to have been released from the album. “The Smoke, The Feeling” offers something completely different though. It’s quick, lite, vocally brilliant and would not be out of place on the dance floors of Ibiza. Quite outstanding. “Happy Birthday” hugely disappoints but the moment is brief as “Ice Age Heatwave” and it’s vibrant feel remind you that you are listening to a quartet of very talented musicians.

The band are on quite an extensive tour promoting “Dream Cave” and i for one will be interested to see how this album plays out live (full review of XOYO, London gig to follow).
