EP REVIEW : Mazde - 'Mazde x LissA'This three track EP by German DJ Matthias Dierkes, aka Mazde, is just a brief taste of what you can expect from the 21-year old new-comer, who is slowly being discussed as the next big thing in Electronica – especially after this harmonious collaboration with singer-songwriter LissA.

And it really only takes opening track ‘Pitch Black’ to be instantly hooked on the stylings of Mazde, who perfectly applies his classically trained background to produce music in a similar vein to Clean Bandit; utilising the sounds of piano keys and string instruments alongside a thumping background melody and finger snapping accents. It’s a song elevated to new heights by the casual vocals of fellow German native LissA, whose nonchalant voice finely compliments the soulful musical arrangement. Lovers of last years smash hit remix of Prayer in C by Robin Schulz, will certainly adore this.

‘Battas’ slows down the tempo to deliver a chilled out dance track while LissA’s voice transforms into a whispy delight of swirling ooo’s and aaah’s when the chorus kicks in, perfectly entrancing when placed in-between verses of sadness as she pleads with a lover to “be mine”, and the haunting theme of loneliness is completely expressed here, creating a long lasting impact even after the song has finished.

‘Dig Deep’ is a closing ballad of sorts, which drops the pace even further, beginning with a heavy focus on the tapping of piano keys and percussion instruments, which become the main attraction. The final track is a powerful masterpiece with LissA this time taking a more fast talking approach to her delivery, but maintaining a sweet and soulful emotive connection to the lyrics of love and resentment,

After becoming first known through his fantastic thumping remix of Disclosures ‘Help Me Lose My Mind’, which has amassed more than 8 million views on Youtube, the Bonn-born producer puts the “art” into artist with this EP and it is truly something special. It’s a short gallery of beautiful chilled out dance songs that captivate the soul and arrests the mind.

‘Mazde x LissA’ is out now.
