The Magic Gang: a cool band with cool tunes, from a cool town, signed to a cool label.

The Brighton outfit, signed to Felix White’s (formerly of The Maccabees) label YALA Records, rolled into London on the back of what has been a year of inescapable ascendancy.

Their brand of Indie pop, with a nod to times gone-by, is already enough to put the greatest of London grumps in a good mood. These tunes, teamed with the addictive cheer shown by the boys in the Gang onstage, sure booted any midweek blues away.

Kentish Town Forum seemed like the perfect venue for the night. Big but not massive, immersive but not overwhelming. The ideal setting. The gratitude shown by The Magic Gang flowed from them, and infected the crowd.

Smashing (joyfully!) through favourites All That I Want Is You, Your Love and Caroline, the punters – with their two-pinter cups- were never far from an endearingly out-of-tune singalong.

Where The Magic Gang will head next, is hard to guess, but with this charisma and these beautifully crafted tunes in their armoury, it can’t be anywhere disappointing.
